Zaculeu
Zaculeu, meaning 'White Earth' in the Mam language, was the pre-Columbian capital of the Mam Maya kingdom in the western highlands of Guatemala. Located near modern-day Huehuetenango, the site was strategically positioned and defended by the Selegua River and deep ravines. Zaculeu was continuously inhabited from the 5th century until the Spanish conquest. Its architecture reflects significant influences from Central Mexico, particularly from Teotihuacán and the Toltecs. In 1525, the city faced a brutal siege by Spanish forces under Gonzalo de Alvarado; after months of holding out and suffering from severe famine, the Mam finally surrendered. In the 1940s, the site underwent a major restoration by the United Fruit Company, where structures were coated with white plaster to replicate their original appearance. This controversial restoration gives Zaculeu a unique, starkly white, and almost modern aesthetic compared to other Maya ruins. The archaeological zone features several stepped pyramids, a well-preserved ball court, and ceremonial platforms surrounding open plazas.
