Fuego Volcano (Guatemala)

Weather…

Volcán de Fuego, or the Volcano of Fire, is among the world's most active and hazardous volcanoes. Located on the borders of the Sacatepéquez, Escuintla, and Chimaltenango departments, it rises to an elevation of 3,763 meters. As a classic stratovolcano, it is renowned for its frequent and violent Strombolian eruptions. Since the arrival of the Spanish in 1524, over 60 major eruptive episodes have been documented, and the volcano maintains near-constant activity with ash and gas plumes. A catastrophic eruption occurred on June 3, 2018, when pyroclastic flows devastated nearby communities, resulting in significant loss of life. Geologically, Fuego is part of the Central America Volcanic Arc, formed by the subduction of the Cocos Plate beneath the Caribbean Plate. It is physically connected to the Acatenango volcano, and the two are often referred to as twin peaks.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Direct access to the summit of Fuego is restricted due to its constant and unpredictable eruptions. Most visitors access viewpoints via the neighboring Acatenango volcano starting from La Soledad.
📅
Best season
November through April is the recommended period, offering the clearest views of the volcanic activity. During the rainy months, cloud cover often completely hides the dramatic eruptions.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain on Fuego's slopes is highly unstable, characterized by loose scree, steep gradients, and recent volcanic deposits. Navigating the ridge between Acatenango and Fuego is extremely difficult.
🎒
What to bring
For those hiking to the nearby viewpoints, warm layers, robust hiking footwear, and windproof jackets are necessary. A headlamp is crucial for watching the eruptions safely during the dark hours.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors typically base themselves in Antigua, where secure parking is available at most hotels and hostels. Transport to the trailheads for viewing the volcano is mostly handled by local tour operators.
⚠️
Safety
Fuego is highly active and dangerous; venturing too close is strictly discouraged and often forbidden due to pyroclastic flows and toxic gases. Always view the eruptions from a safe, guided distance.
⏱️
Time needed
Viewing Fuego from Acatenango requires an overnight trip spanning about two days. The actual time spent observing the eruptions depends on the weather and the specific itinerary of your guided trek.
