Cobán is the capital of the Alta Verapaz department, positioned within the misty cloud forests of the Guatemalan highlands at an elevation of 1,320 meters. Founded in 1543 by Dominican friars led by Bartolomé de las Casas, the city evolved into a hub for German immigrants during the 19th century, who significantly influenced the local coffee industry. Today, Cobán is internationally recognized for producing premium highland coffee and cardamom, with Guatemala being a global leader in the export of this spice. Culturally, the city serves as the heartland of the Q’eqchi’ Maya, celebrated annually during the Rabin Ajau folklore festival, where an indigenous queen is crowned. The climate is defined by the unique 'chipe-chipe,' a fine, persistent drizzle that sustains the lush vegetation and an incredible variety of rare orchids. The surrounding area features remarkable natural landmarks such as the Lanquín caves and the turquoise limestone pools of Semuc Champey. Cobán remains a vital gateway for ecotourism and the preservation of Guatemala's vast biological diversity.
