Antigua Guatemala, commonly known as Antigua, is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in Latin America and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Founded in 1543 as Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, it served for over 200 years as the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, which governed nearly all of Central America. The city is famous for its cobblestone streets, animated facades, and magnificent Baroque churches that have maintained their historical charm despite numerous earthquakes. Its skyline is dominated by three majestic volcanoes: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango, providing a dramatic natural backdrop. In 1773, the catastrophic Santa Marta earthquakes nearly leveled the city, prompting the relocation of the capital to its present-day site in Guatemala City. Today, Antigua is a major tourist destination, renowned for its elaborate Easter processions (Semana Santa) and as a center for high-quality highland coffee production. The ruins of many monasteries and cathedrals, such as the Convent of the Capuchins, lend the city a unique and timeless atmosphere.
