Kaminaljuyu (Guatemala)

Weather…

Kaminaljuyu is a major Maya archaeological site located on the highland plateau within the modern urban limits of Guatemala City. During the Preclassic period (c. 800 BC, 200 AD), it was one of the most significant centers in the Mayan world, controlling vital trade routes for obsidian and jade. The city was once vast, consisting of over 200 earthen mounds and temple platforms, though most have been destroyed or covered by modern urban sprawl. Today, only a small section is preserved as an archaeological park, primarily the Acropolis area. Kaminaljuyu is notable for its use of adobe (earthen brick) architecture, which differs from the stone structures typical of the Maya lowlands. Archaeological evidence shows strong links to the Mexican metropolis of Teotihuacán, indicating extensive trade and cultural exchange. The site provides key insights into the early development of Mayan civilization in the highlands.
