San Felipe Castle (Guatemala)

Weather…

The Castillo de San Felipe de Lara is a Spanish colonial fort situated at the entrance of Lake Izabal from the Dulce River in eastern Guatemala. The fortress was constructed in 1644 by order of Diego de Avendaño to safeguard the strategic gateway to the country's interior from raids by English, Dutch, and French pirates. Its unique design combines military defensive features with storage facilities intended to protect valuable goods destined for export to Spain. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle underwent multiple cycles of destruction, reconstruction, and expansion, and it also functioned as a prison during certain historical periods. In the mid-1950s, the fort was extensively restored under the direction of architect Francisco Ferrús Roig to preserve its colonial heritage. Today, the castle is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list and remains one of the most significant historical monuments in the region. Visitors can explore the narrow corridors, battlements, and cannon platforms while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding river and tropical landscape.
