Acatenango Volcano (Guatemala)

Weather…

Acatenango Volcano is a massive stratovolcano in the Chimaltenango department, reaching an altitude of 3,976 meters. Along with its southern neighbor, Volcán de Fuego, it forms the volcanic complex known as La Horqueta. Acatenango features two primary peaks: the higher Pico Mayor and the slightly lower Yepocapa. It stands as one of Central America's tallest volcanoes and provides an exceptional vantage point for observing the near-constant eruptions of the adjacent Fuego. The volcano's last significant eruptive period occurred between 1924 and 1927, with a smaller steam eruption recorded in 1972. Currently considered dormant, it is still closely monitored due to its structural link to the active Fuego. The trek to its summit passes through several distinct ecological zones, ranging from agricultural fields to high-altitude volcanic tundra.
