El Baúl Stelae (Guatemala)

Weather…

El Baúl is a significant archaeological site of the Cotzumalhuapa culture located on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. The site is famous for its monumental sculptures and stelae, which exhibit a unique artistic style distinct from Classic Maya art. Of particular importance is Stela 1, which bears one of the earliest known dates in the Maya region (37 AD according to the Long Count). Depictions often feature ballplayers, deities, and rulers in dynamic poses, frequently accompanied by non-Maya glyphic symbols. El Baúl was part of a larger urban system connected via paved roads (sacbeob) to other centers such as Bilbao. The economy was based on cacao cultivation, which flourished in this fertile volcanic region. Many of the sculptures are currently housed in an open-air museum located on the grounds of a sugar plantation. The site provides vital insights into the Preclassic and Classic period development of the Pacific coast.
