Semuc Champey Family Pools (Guatemala)

Weather…

Semuc Champey is a prominent natural monument located in the Alta Verapaz department of Guatemala, approximately eleven kilometers south of Lanquín. The site features a 300-meter long natural limestone bridge beneath which the Cahabón River flows through a subterranean cave system. Atop this limestone formation lies a series of seven tiered, turquoise pools filled with clear mountain spring water that remains tranquil despite the turbulent river below. These pools vary in depth from one to three meters and are interconnected by small waterfalls, forming a unique hydrological terrace. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense subtropical rainforest, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife including howler monkeys and various tropical bird species. Formally declared a Natural Monument in 2005, the area is protected to preserve its exceptional geological structures and the surrounding ecological integrity.
