Aguateca (Guatemala)

Weather…

Aguateca is a significant Maya archaeological site located in the Petexbatún region of the Petén department. The city is perched on a strategic 90-meter high limestone cliff overlooking Lake Petexbatún and is protected by a deep natural chasm. During the Late Classic period, Aguateca served as a twin capital of a powerful kingdom alongside Dos Pilas. The site is particularly famous for its sudden and violent abandonment around 830 AD. Because the inhabitants fled in haste, leaving their possessions behind, Aguateca has provided archaeologists with a unique 'snapshot' of Mayan daily life, similar to Pompeii. Excavations in elite residences have revealed tools, ceramics, and unfinished monuments exactly where they were left. The city is also notable for its extensive defensive walls, which attest to the intense endemic warfare that characterized the region's collapse.
