Antigua Coffee Plantations
The Antigua Valley is world-renowned for producing some of the finest coffee on earth, favored by the mineral-rich volcanic soils of the surrounding giants: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. Coffee culture in this region dates back to the 19th century when cultivation replaced indigo export as the primary source of income. The plantations are situated at an altitude of approximately 1,500 to 1,700 meters above sea level, allowing for slow bean maturation and the development of complex flavor profiles. A characteristic of Antigua coffee is shade-growing under Gravilea trees, which protect the sensitive plants from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations. Today, the sector is certified by the 'Genuine Antigua Coffee' protected designation of origin, ensuring that only coffee harvested in this specific valley can bear the name. Many historic fincas have opened to agrotourism, offering visitors insights into the entire process from manual harvesting to drying on traditional patios.
