Vaitupu Island (Tuvalu)

Weather…

Vaitupu is the largest island in Tuvalu and is characterized by a unique geography, being almost entirely enclosed by a coral reef. Unlike most of Tuvalu's atolls, Vaitupu features a large central lagoon that is nearly landlocked, connecting to the ocean only through two narrow channels. The island is historically significant as the educational hub of the nation, housing the Motufoua Secondary School, Tuvalu's only government secondary school, which has been in operation since 1905. Agriculture plays a more prominent role on Vaitupu than on other islands, with copra, bananas, and breadfruit being among the primary products. During the period of British colonial administration, the island served as an important site for local governance. Today, about 1,500 people reside on the island, which is renowned for its lush vegetation and traditional fishing practices, with the conservation of marine resources being a high priority.
