Kulia is the administrative center and one of the two villages on the island of Niutao, a circular reef island in central Tuvalu. Located on the western side of the island, the village is known for its highly organized communal structures and social cohesion. Life in Kulia is profoundly shaped by the island's isolation, leading to the preservation of archaic customs and a strong sense of community spirit. The residents are skilled fishermen who use traditional canoes to hunt in the deep Pacific waters surrounding the reef. In addition to marine resources, the cultivation of pulaka in large pits dug into the coral ground remains a vital source of nutrition. Kulia is centered around its church and the Falekaupule (community hall), where island elders make key decisions. The village's architecture features a mix of traditional thatched-roof 'fale' houses and modern concrete structures. Despite limited land resources, Kulia is an animated cultural center where the Tuvaluan language and Polynesian festivities are central to daily life.
