Tanrake is the main village and administrative seat of Nui Atoll, located in the central part of Tuvalu. The village is situated on Fenua Tapu, the largest islet of the atoll, and holds a unique cultural status within the nation. The people of Tanrake are linguistically and culturally linked to Kiribati, following a migration from the Gilbert Islands in the 17th or 18th century. Consequently, the residents speak a dialect heavily influenced by Kiribati (Gilbertese), making Tanrake a distinct cultural enclave in an otherwise Polynesian nation. Village life centers on fishing and copra production, utilizing the abundant resources of Nui's lagoon. Tanrake features a prominent church and the Falekaupule (community hall), where traditional leaders govern local affairs. Despite their linguistic differences, the inhabitants of Tanrake are fully integrated into Tuvaluan society. The village is home to the atoll's only school and a medical station providing primary healthcare for the surrounding islets.
