Fualopa Islet (Tuvalu)

Weather…

Fualopa is a small, uninhabited islet located on the western fringe of Funafuti Atoll and is a core part of the Funafuti Conservation Area established in 1996. The islet's vegetation is dominated by dense stands of Pisonia grandis and coconut palms, which provide critical nesting grounds for a variety of seabirds. Notably, the Black Noddy population thrives here due to the lack of human interference. The surrounding marine waters are characterized by pristine coral reefs and a high density of reef fish, including green sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks. As Fualopa has remained uninhabited for decades, it serves as an important ecological benchmark for studying Pacific island biodiversity. Access to the islet is strictly controlled, requiring a permit from the local Kaupule (Town Council) to ensure the continued protection of its fragile environment. Geographically, its position at the edge of the reef makes it highly susceptible to coastal erosion driven by sea-level rise and intense tropical cyclones.
