Nukufetau Atoll (Tuvalu)

Weather…

Nukufetau is a large, rectangular atoll located in the center of Tuvalu, renowned for its deep and navigable lagoon. It consists of about 33 islets, with Savave being the most populous and serving as the administrative hub. Historically, Nukufetau played a significant role during World War II when the U.S. Navy blasted a deep passage through the reef in 1943 to allow fleet access to the lagoon and constructed an airfield on the islet of Motulalo. The remnants of this passage still allow larger vessels to enter the lagoon today, which is crucial for the atoll's supply chain. The economy is based on fishing and marine harvesting, with the lagoon boasting high biodiversity. Culturally, the people of Nukufetau are known for their hospitality and traditional festivals, where community dances (fatele) play a central role. Like the rest of the nation, Nukufetau is heavily impacted by global warming, resulting in the salination of groundwater and taro cultivation areas.
