Tepuka is an uninhabited islet (motu) in the western part of the Funafuti Atoll and serves as a vital ecological refuge within the nation of Tuvalu. The islet is part of the Funafuti Conservation Area, established in 1996, which aims to preserve the atoll's terrestrial and marine biodiversity. Geographically, Tepuka is characterized by dense tropical vegetation and well-preserved coral beaches, standing in sharp contrast to the urbanized main island of Fongafale. The islet serves as a critical nesting site for numerous seabirds, including noddies and white terns, which can breed here undisturbed by human settlements. Historically, Tepuka has remained largely untouched, contributing to the preservation of rare native plant species such as Guettarda speciosa. The surrounding reef is renowned for its high density of reef fish and pristine coral colonies, making it a focal point for marine biological research. Protecting Tepuka is essential for maintaining the ecological integrity of the entire Funafuti Atoll. More recently, the islet has been increasingly monitored in the context of coastal erosion and sea-level rise studies.
