Funafuti Conservation Area (Tuvalu)

Weather…

The Funafuti Conservation Area (Kogatapu) is a marine protected area established in 1996, covering approximately 33 square kilometers of reefs, lagoons, and motus (islets) in the western part of the Funafuti atoll. It was created to preserve marine biodiversity and protect fish stocks, which are central to Tuvalu's food security. The protected area is home to an impressive variety of corals, tropical fish, sea turtles, and seabirds. Notably, uninhabited islets like Tepuka Vili Vili serve as critical nesting sites. Management is carried out by the Funafuti Town Council (Kaupule) in collaboration with local communities. For visitors, the area gives unique opportunities for snorkeling and nature observation in an almost pristine state. As Tuvalu is heavily threatened by sea-level rise, the conservation area also functions as a living laboratory for studying the resilience of atoll ecosystems to climate change. Preserving this area is crucial for the ecological balance of the entire atoll.
