Tokelau is one of the two main villages on the island of Nanumanga, a reef island in northwestern Tuvalu. Situated on the western side of the island, the village is densely built and serves as a vital social hub, with the Falekaupule (community meeting hall) at its heart. Life in Tokelau revolves around traditional subsistence practices, primarily fishing and the cultivation of coconut palms and pulaka in inland pits. Geographically, the village is notable for its proximity to the Caves of Nanumanga, an underwater cave system that provides archaeological evidence of ancient human settlement. Despite the constant threat of tropical cyclones and coastal erosion, Tokelau preserves lively cultural traditions, particularly unique forms of song and dance performed during island festivals. The village maintains essential services, including a medical clinic, and plays a key role in the local governance of Nanumanga through its community elders.
