Tepuka Vili Vili Islet (Tuvalu)

Weather…

Tepuka Vili Vili is a tiny, uninhabited motu (islet) in the western part of Funafuti atoll, part of the Funafuti Conservation Area. The islet has become a poignant symbol of the direct impact of climate change and extreme weather events in Tuvalu. In 2015, Cyclone Pam almost completely devastated Tepuka Vili Vili, uprooting vegetation and washing away much of its landmass. Before this disaster, the islet was known for its natural beauty and as a key nesting site for seabirds. Today, its barren landscape demonstrates the vulnerability of Pacific atolls to storm surges and rising sea levels. Nevertheless, it remains an important site for ecological studies, as researchers can observe the natural regeneration of coastal ecosystems here. For visitors, Tepuka Vili Vili is a reminder of the ecological crisis, highlighting the urgent need for global climate protection. Accessible only by boat, the islet gives a fascinating, if melancholy, view of the vast lagoon despite the destruction it has endured.
