Senala is a prominent village located on the islet of Fongafale, which forms part of the Funafuti atoll, the capital of Tuvalu. As a core residential and administrative area, Senala plays a vital role in the socio-economic structure of the nation's primary urban center. Historically, the village's growth is tied to the post-World War II era, during which Funafuti transitioned into a centralized hub for the newly independent nation in 1978. Geographically, Senala is situated on a very narrow strip of land, making it highly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, specifically sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion into the groundwater. The community is governed by the Funafuti Kaupule, and it features traditional meeting houses known as maneapas, which are central to local governance and cultural celebrations. In recent years, Senala has seen improvements in renewable energy infrastructure, such as solar power installations, aimed at increasing national resilience. Despite its limited physical size, the village exemplifies the challenges of high population density in a country where land is an extremely scarce and precious resource.
