Sumpango is a lively municipality in the Sacatepéquez Department, internationally recognized for its deep-rooted traditions and artistic craftsmanship. Much like neighboring Santiago, Sumpango is famous for its Giant Kite Festival on November 1st, though the kites here are often even more monumental and are displayed on the local soccer field. These artworks carry complex social and religious messages and are regarded as spiritual communications to ancestors. The town has a long history dating back to pre-Hispanic times when it was a significant center for the Kaqchikel Maya. Geographically, Sumpango is situated on a plateau at approximately 1,900 meters, providing a good climate for agriculture. The economy is heavily export-oriented, particularly in fresh vegetables like peas and beans produced for North American and European markets. The community is marked by strong cohesion and the preservation of indigenous identity amidst modernization.
