Tikal (Guatemala)

Weather…

Tikal, located deep within the rainforests of the Petén department, is arguably the most magnificent and significant archaeological site of the Maya civilization. Inhabited from the 4th century BC until the 10th century AD, the city reached its zenith during the Classic period as a dominant regional superpower. Its architectural core is the Great Plaza, flanked by the iconic Temple I (Temple of the Great Jaguar) and Temple II (Temple of the Masks). Temple IV remains one of the most spectacular structures, soaring 65 meters above the jungle floor to offer a striking panoramic view of the forest canopy. Beyond its military and political might, Tikal was a center of advanced learning, evidenced by complex astronomical alignments and intricate hieroglyphic inscriptions. In 1979, Tikal was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its combined cultural and natural significance. Today, the ruins are preserved within Tikal National Park, where visitors can encounter lively wildlife, such as howler monkeys, toucans, and coatis, alongside the towering stone monuments of a vanished empire.
