Conquest of Tayasal (Guatemala)

Weather…

The conquest of Tayasal in 1697 marks the official end of indigenous resistance against the Spanish Crown in Central America. Located on an island in Lake Petén Itzá, Tayasal was the capital of the Itzá Maya and remained independent for over 150 years after the fall of the major Maya empires. The decisive expedition was led by Martín de Urzúa y Arizmendi, who launched an attack with a fleet of boats and a well-equipped army. Following a fierce battle on March 13, 1697, the island was captured and its temples destroyed. This victory granted the Spanish access to the dense rainforests of Petén, though full colonization of the region took several more decades. The fall of Tayasal is often regarded as the final chapter of the Spanish conquest of Mexico and Central America. Today, the island is known as Flores and is a popular tourist destination, while ongoing archaeological studies continue to reveal the pre-Columbian history of the Itzá people.
