Nakum Ruins (Guatemala)

Weather…

Nakum is an impressive Maya site located in northeastern Petén, forming part of the 'Maya Triangle' alongside Tikal and Yaxhá. The city reached its peak during the Classic period and is distinguished by an extraordinary density of monumental structures. Most notable is the Acropolis, which encompasses a vast array of residential and ceremonial buildings. Archaeological evidence suggests that Nakum experienced an unusual resurgence during the 9th-century collapse of other Maya centers, indicating a successful strategic shift. Its proximity to the Holmul River established the city as a major trading hub for goods from the highlands and the coast. Nakum's architecture is famous for its massive roof combs and intricate friezes depicting religious and political symbols. Despite its remote location within the dense rainforest, the site is now part of the Yaxhá-Nakum-Naranjo National Park. Ongoing excavations consistently provide new insights into the social organization and daily life of the ancient Maya.
