Lubaantun (Belize)

Weather…

Lubaantun is a major Late Classic Maya archaeological site located in the Toledo District of Belize, approximately 42 kilometers from Punta Gorda. The site's modern Maya name translates to 'Place of Fallen Stones,' reflecting the collapsed state of many structures when explorers first arrived. Constructed between 700 and 900 AD, Lubaantun is architecturally unique for its mortar-less masonry, where precisely cut limestone blocks were fitted together using gravity and interlocking shapes, a technique rare in the Maya world and reminiscent of Incan engineering. The ceremonial center features eleven major structures situated around five main plazas, including three distinct ball courts. Evidence suggests Lubaantun was a regional center for political and religious activity, particularly focused on the production of cacao and elaborate ceramic figurines. The site gained international notoriety due to the claimed discovery of the Mitchell-Hedges 'Crystal Skull' in 1924, though modern archaeological analysis suggests the artifact was likely manufactured in Europe during the 19th century.
