Rio Grande Hills (Belize)

Weather…

The Rio Grande Hills are a rugged expanse of karstic landscape in the southern Toledo District of Belize. These hills form the watershed for the Rio Grande, one of the main rivers in the region, which winds its way through the terrain towards the Caribbean Sea. The area is characterized by steep, conical hills and deep, narrow valleys, all covered in dense, humid broadleaf forest. This topography is challenging for agriculture, which has helped to preserve much of the original forest cover. The hills are an important habitat for a wide range of wildlife, including several species of wild cats and primates. The region is also dotted with numerous small Maya archaeological sites, many of which remain unexcavated, hinting at a significant ancient population that was adapted to this challenging environment.
