Lamanai (Belize)

Weather…

Lamanai is one of Belize's oldest and most significant Mayan archaeological sites, located on the banks of the New River Lagoon in the Orange Walk District. Its name, meaning "submerged crocodile" in Yucatec Maya, is reflected in the artifacts and architectural motifs found throughout the ancient city. The site is notable for its exceptionally long period of continuous occupation, spanning over 3,000 years from approximately 1500 BC until the arrival of Spanish missionaries in the 16th century. The High Temple stands as the most prominent structure, reaching a height of 33 meters and providing a panoramic view of the surrounding rainforest canopy. Other major buildings include the Mask Temple, featuring 4-meter-high stone carvings of faces, and the Jaguar Temple. The ruins are situated within a 385-hectare reserve that preserves both the archaeological structures and the diverse local wildlife, including howler monkeys and crocodiles. The presence of two 16th-century Spanish mission churches illustrates the complex history of interaction between indigenous populations and European colonizers.
