Altun Ha (Belize)

Weather…

Altun Ha is a significant Maya archaeological site located in northern Belize, roughly 31 miles (50 kilometers) north of Belize City. Its name, which translates to 'Rockstone Pond', refers to the ancient Maya reservoirs found on the site. Altun Ha served as a major ceremonial and trade center, particularly influential from 400 to 900 AD. The site gained global recognition in 1968 when Dr. David Pendergast discovered the largest carved Maya jade object ever found: the Jade Head of the sun god, Kinich Ahau. Weighing 9.7 pounds (4.4 kilograms), this artifact is now a national symbol of Belize and is kept in a secure vault at the Central Bank. The site features two primary plazas (Plaza A and Plaza B) surrounded by various pyramids, including the Temple of the Masonry Altars. Its proximity to the Caribbean coast allowed the inhabitants to thrive on marine trade and resource extraction. Notably, the outline of the main temple is famously depicted on the label of Belize's national beer, Belikin.
