Placencia (Belize)

Weather…

Placencia is a narrow, 26-kilometer-long peninsula located in the Stann Creek District of southern Belize. It separates the Placencia Lagoon from the Caribbean Sea and is widely regarded as having the finest white sand beaches on the Belizean mainland. Originally a secluded fishing village founded in the 1800s, it has evolved into a premier tourist destination while maintaining its traditional Garifuna and Creole cultural heritage. A defining feature of the town is the "Placencia Sidewalk," a mile-long concrete pedestrian path measuring only 4 feet (1.2 meters) wide, which for decades served as the community's primary thoroughfare. The southern tip of the peninsula, Placencia Village, acts as a major gateway for divers exploring the southern reaches of the Belize Barrier Reef and the nearby Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. The lagoon side is a vital habitat for West Indian manatees and various bird species, making it a focal point for ecological conservation.
