Weather…

Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), meaning "Cave of the Stone Sepulcher," is a premier Mayan archaeological site located near San Ignacio within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. This extensive cave system served as a critical ritual site during the Late Classic period (AD 700-900). Accessing the cave requires a jungle hike followed by swimming into the cavern entrance and navigating subterranean river passages. The site is world-renowned for its perfectly preserved artifacts, with over 1,400 cataloged items including pottery, stoneware, and ceremonial objects left exactly where the Maya placed them centuries ago. Its most famous inhabitant is the "Crystal Maiden," the skeleton of a young sacrificial victim that has become entirely calcified over time, creating a sparkling, crystalline appearance under artificial light. The cave provides profound insights into Mayan spiritual beliefs regarding Xibalba, the underworld, and the desperate ritual sacrifices made during periods of catastrophic drought.
