The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is the oldest and largest protected forest area in Belize, located in the Cayo District within the Maya Mountains. Established in 1944, the reserve encompasses approximately 430 square kilometers of unique terrain characterized by a Precambrian granite basement. This geological foundation makes it one of the oldest landscapes in Central America, contrasting sharply with the limestone regions elsewhere in Belize. The vegetation is dominated by the Caribbean pine (Pinus caribaea), thriving in the cooler upland climate. Key natural features within the reserve include the 1000 Foot Falls, the highest waterfall in Central America, and the Rio Frio Cave, which features one of the largest natural cave entrances in the region. Despite a devastating pine bark beetle infestation in 1999 that destroyed significant forest cover, the ecosystem is currently undergoing a robust natural recovery. The reserve serves as a critical nesting ground for endangered avian species, such as the orange-breasted falcon.
