Weather…

Xunantunich is a major Classic period Maya archaeological site located in the Cayo District, situated atop a ridge overlooking the Mopan River. Its modern name means 'Stone Woman' in Yucatec Maya, derived from reported sightings of a female ghost dressed in traditional clothing among the ruins. The site rose to prominence between 600 and 900 AD, serving as a significant ceremonial and political hub in the Belize River valley. The central attraction is 'El Castillo', a massive temple-pyramid that rises 130 feet (40 meters) above the plaza level, making it the second tallest ancient structure in the country. The temple is famous for its intricate stucco friezes on the eastern and western sides, which depict celestial symbols, royal lineages, and deities. Access to the park involves crossing the Mopan River via a unique, hand-cranked ferry at the village of San Jose Succotz. Archaeological evidence suggests the city suffered structural damage from an earthquake around 900 AD, which likely contributed to its eventual abandonment.
