Belize City is the largest municipality and the economic hub of Belize, situated at the mouth of the Belize River on the Caribbean coast. Founded in the 17th century by British logwood cutters, the city served as the capital of British Honduras for several centuries. Due to its exposed coastal location, it was repeatedly struck by devastating hurricanes, which eventually led to the relocation of the capital to Belmopan in 1970. A prominent landmark is the Belize City Swing Bridge, a hand-operated revolving bridge built in 1923 that connects the north and south sides of the city. The city is home to significant colonial sites, including St. John's Cathedral and the historic Government House. It remains the nation's primary port and cultural center.
