Belize Barrier Reef (Belize)

Weather…

The Belize Barrier Reef is the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, stretching approximately 300 kilometers along the coastline of Belize. As a vital component of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, it ranks as the second-largest coral reef complex in the world. Charles Darwin referred to it in 1842 as the most remarkable reef in the West Indies. The system encompasses hundreds of coral islands, known locally as cayes, and features three prominent offshore atolls: Turneffe Atoll, Lighthouse Reef, and Glover's Reef. It is home to an extraordinary level of biodiversity, including over 65 species of stony corals and more than 500 species of fish. In recognition of its global ecological significance, UNESCO designated the reef as a World Heritage site in 1996. Beyond its biological value, the reef provides a critical natural defense for the shoreline against hurricanes and tidal surges, while supporting the nation's primary tourism and fishing sectors.
