Baron Bliss Lighthouse (Belize)

Weather…

The Baron Bliss Lighthouse is a prominent monument and navigational aid located at Fort George Point in Belize City. It was erected to honor Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss, an English-born traveler who became Belize's greatest benefactor. Despite never setting foot on land due to paralysis, Baron Bliss spent several months on his yacht in the harbor and was so moved by the locals' kindness that he left a trust fund of nearly two million US dollars to the country. The lighthouse, painted in the traditional maritime colors of white and red, also serves as the final resting place for the Baron, whose tomb is located at its base. His substantial endowment funded the construction of the Baron Bliss Institute, city markets, and various health clinics across the nation. Every March 9th, Belize celebrates National Benefactors Day, formerly Baron Bliss Day, featuring a colorful harbor regatta. The structure stands as a testament to colonial history and the enduring impact of private philanthropy on Belizean public life.
