Cerros (Belize)

Weather…

Cerros is a significant Maya archaeological site located in northern Belize, situated directly on the shores of Corozal Bay. The city reached its cultural and economic peak during the Late Preclassic period, between 400 BC and 450 AD, functioning as a vital coastal trading hub. Its strategic location allowed it to control the exchange of prestige goods such as obsidian and jade between the Maya highlands and the Caribbean coast. The site features several monumental structures, most notably Structure 4, a 21-meter high pyramid adorned with large stucco masks. These masks are believed to represent deities or deified ancestors, reflecting the complex religious and political hierarchy of the time. Despite its early success, Cerros was largely abandoned by the 5th century, a shift that coincided with the emergence of larger inland centers in the Classic period. Today, the site provides crucial evidence of early Maya urban planning and the evolution of divine kingship.
