Crooked Tree is one of the oldest inland settlements in Belize, located in the Belize District on an island surrounded by a vast lagoon system. Established around 1750 by British loggers, the village was named after the gnarled cashew trees that characterize the local landscape. Geographically, the site is defined by the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, a 16,000-acre wetland habitat protected since 1984. This ecosystem serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds and supports the largest nesting population of Jabiru storks in Central America. The local economy is largely agricultural, with the annual cashew harvest in May serving as the cultural highlight of the year. During the popular Cashew Festival, residents showcase a variety of artisanal products, including cashew wine, jellies, and roasted seeds. Access to the village is provided by a long man-made causeway crossing the lagoon. Due to seasonal fluctuations in water levels, the environment undergoes dramatic shifts, making Crooked Tree a premier destination for birdwatchers worldwide. Despite its ecological fame, the community has remained a stronghold of traditional Belizean Creole culture.
