Getting there

The nature reserve is best reached with a robust four-wheel drive vehicle starting from the nearby town of San Ignacio. The unpaved forest dirt roads are often quite uneven and can be particularly challenging to navigate after heavy rains.

Best season

The drier period from January to May is generally the most suitable time for visits, as the dirt tracks are most easily passable then. During the wetter season, many of the main routes quickly turn into deep mud, making progress very difficult.

Terrain & paths

The area is deeply characterized by dense, hilly tropical mixed forests into which the course of the Macal River cuts deeply. The hiking trails can sometimes be very steep, root-filled, and also somewhat confusing in the dense jungle vegetation.

What to bring

Sturdy hiking boots with a good grip, long, breathable trousers, and plenty of drinking water are indispensable for any jungle hike. In addition, you should carry sufficient insect repellent and possibly a small machete for overgrown paths.

Parking

Parking spaces are hardly formally designated in the marginal areas of the reserve, which is why vehicles are mostly left at wider trail intersections. It is crucial to park the car in such a way that logging trucks can still pass without problems.

Finding your way in the dense forest can be highly deceptive, which is why the accompaniment of a local guide is strongly recommended. Furthermore, one should always watch out for venomous snakes and never carelessly reach into deep crevices.

Time needed

Short hikes to various waterfalls or viewpoints can easily be arranged as an engaging half-day excursion. However, if you want to penetrate deeper into the reserve and truly enjoy the isolation, you should plan to spend a full day doing so.
