Placencia Village is located at the southern tip of the 16-mile-long Placencia Peninsula in the Stann Creek District of Belize. Originally charted by Spanish sailors in the 17th century as Punta Placencia, the settlement functioned for centuries as an isolated fishing outpost. Its geography is characterized by its position between the Placencia Lagoon to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. During the late 20th century, the economic foundation shifted from commercial fishing to international tourism, with the village now serving as a primary gateway to the Belize Barrier Reef. A defining feature of the settlement is its main sidewalk, a narrow concrete path that for generations served as the primary thoroughfare for residents. Despite near-total destruction by Hurricane Iris in October 2001, the village underwent a rapid reconstruction process that modernized its infrastructure. Today, Placencia operates as a significant hub for marine expeditions and provides essential access to the nearby Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and various offshore cayes.
