Independence and Mango Creek constitute a merged community in the Stann Creek District of southern Belize. The settlement's history is deeply intertwined with the development of the banana and citrus industries during the mid-20th century. Geographically, the area is situated on the western shore of the Placencia Lagoon, serving as a critical logistical link to the deep-water port of Big Creek. This port is the primary exit point for agricultural exports from southern Belize, most notably bananas and crude oil. The community evolved from two separate villages that grew together during the post-war economic boom. Today, Independence functions as an administrative hub for the southern portion of the district, housing significant educational institutions and government offices. The population is ethnically diverse, comprising Creole, Garifuna, Maya, and Mestizo residents, which enriches the local cultural landscape. A regular ferry service connects the community to the Placencia Peninsula, establishing Independence as a vital transit point for both commuters and tourists. Its economic importance continues to grow with the ongoing expansion of the port facilities and manufacturing sectors.
