Monkey River Hills (Belize)

Weather…

The Monkey River Hills are a series of low-lying, rolling limestone hills that run parallel to the coast in southern Belize, primarily within the Toledo District. These hills are bisected by the Monkey River, one of the major waterways in the region. The landscape is a mosaic of tropical broadleaf forest and, closer to the coast, mangrove swamps and coastal savanna. Geologically, these hills are a classic example of a tropical karst environment, with numerous small caves and sinkholes hidden beneath the forest canopy. The area is renowned for its population of Black Howler Monkeys, whose loud calls are a distinctive feature of the local soundscape. The hills and the adjacent riverine ecosystem form an important biological corridor connecting the coastal plains to the foothills of the Maya Mountains.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to the area is most commonly organized from the coastal village of Monkey River Town or via dirt tracks branching off the Southern Highway. Guided boat tours along the river often provide the easiest initial entry.
📅
Best season
The dry season from February to May is generally the optimal time to explore, as the dirt roads remain more passable. The rainy season can severely disrupt overland travel and significantly increase local insect populations.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists of gently rolling hills covered in dense, humid broadleaf forest and agricultural patches. Hiking here typically involves navigating muddy trails, thick undergrowth, and occasional small stream crossings.
🎒
What to bring
Breathable, long-sleeved tropical clothing and robust insect repellent are absolute necessities in this environment. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are recommended for the muddy conditions, alongside ample drinking water.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors typically leave their vehicles at secure locations in nearby towns like Punta Gorda or at designated staging areas in Monkey River Town. Unattended parking on remote rural dirt roads is generally discouraged.
⚠️
Safety
Getting lost in the dense vegetation is a genuine risk, making local guides highly advisable for any deep exploration. Visitors should also be aware of local wildlife, including snakes, and heat exhaustion on humid days.
⏱️
Time needed
A standard visit involving a boat tour and a brief jungle hike usually takes around a half-day to complete. For those delving deeper into the surrounding hills, a full-day excursion should be planned from your base.
