Burrell Boom is a historic village in the Belize District, situated along the banks of the Belize River. The settlement's name originates from the iron chains, or booms, that were stretched across the river in the 18th and 19th centuries to catch mahogany logs drifting downstream. These logs were harvested deep in the interior and floated to the coast during the rainy season. The village's foundation dates back to the era of the British woodcutters, known as Baymen. Geographically, Burrell Boom is located in a flat savanna landscape, where the soil is enriched by the river's periodic flooding. Beyond its forestry heritage, the village is now widely recognized for its agricultural products, particularly the production of local fruit wines and preserves. Every year on Easter Monday, the community hosts the famous Burrell Boom Horse Races, a premier sporting event that attracts visitors from across the country. While maintaining its quiet rural character, the village increasingly serves as a residential area for commuters from Belize City. Its location near the Community Baboon Sanctuary also makes it a popular stop for eco-tourists exploring the region's wildlife.
