St. Herman's Blue Hole (Belize)

Weather…

St. Herman's Blue Hole is a natural limestone pool located in the heart of the national park of the same name in Belize. This hydrological phenomenon is a classic example of a cenote, formed by the collapse of an underground cave roof. The pool is part of the Sibun River system and is connected via subterranean passages to the nearby St. Herman's Cave. The sapphire-blue water reaches a maximum depth of approximately 8 meters and maintains a refreshing temperature year-round. The surrounding vegetation consists of dense, primary tropical rainforest, providing habitat for species like the keel-billed toucan and various hummingbirds. For the ancient Maya, this site held significant spiritual importance, as caves and cenotes were viewed as portals to the underworld, Xibalba. Today, the site's geology is subject to intensive research aimed at mapping the complex flow paths of underground water systems within Belize's karst landscape.
