Gumarcaaj Ruins (Guatemala)

Weather…

Gumarcaaj, also known as Utatlán, was the final capital of the K'iche' Maya kingdom before the Spanish conquest. Founded around 1400 AD under the reign of King Q'uq'umatz, the city was renowned for its strategic location on a plateau surrounded by deep ravines. The architecture of Gumarcaaj included monumental temple pyramids, palaces, and a ball court, all once decorated with stucco and murals. In 1524, the city was besieged and eventually destroyed by the troops of Pedro de Alvarado after the K'iche' leaders were burned. Today, the ruins bear witness to the complexity of Late Postclassic Maya society and serve as an important site for contemporary Maya ceremonies. The archaeological site also contains artificial tunnels used for ritual purposes. A small on-site museum displays artifacts and the history of the K'iche' dynasty.
