Nui Atoll (Tuvalu)

Weather…

Nui Atoll occupies a unique position within Tuvalu, as its inhabitants are historically and linguistically closely linked to the Gilbert Islands in Kiribati. While Polynesian languages are spoken on the other islands of Tuvalu, a variant of Micronesian Gilbertese is spoken on Nui, stemming from a migration several centuries ago. The atoll comprises at least 21 islets surrounding an elongated lagoon, with Fenua Tapu being the largest and primary inhabited islet. European discovery occurred in 1568 by the Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira, who named the atoll 'Isla de Jesús'. Daily life is heavily shaped by the sea, with the lagoon rich in fish and invertebrates that serve as the main food source. Vegetation consists primarily of coconut palms and pandanus, with copra production once being a vital economic sector. Today, Nui struggles with the impacts of climate change, as storm surges during cyclones, such as Pam in 2015, caused significant damage to infrastructure and plantations.
