Niutao Salt Lake

Weather…
Water temperature…
The Niutao Salt Lake is a rare geographical feature on the island of Niutao, which, unlike most atolls in Tuvalu, does not possess an open central lagoon but rather an enclosed inland body of water. This brackish lake is located in the northern part of the island and is a remnant of a former lagoon that became separated from the open ocean due to geological uplift and coral growth. The lake's water has high salinity, favoring specialized flora and fauna, including certain algae species and resilient crustaceans. Historically, the lake served as a landmark for islanders and as an alternative food source for small marine organisms during times of hardship. The lake's surroundings are characterized by dense pandanus and coconut groves, providing important shelter for land birds. Due to its isolated location, Niutao Salt Lake is an important subject for studying the evolution of isolated marine species and the chemical composition of inland waters on coral islands. Today, the lake is increasingly affected by rising sea levels, which can lead to the salinization of surrounding agricultural areas.
