Nanumanga Island (Tuvalu)

Weather…

Nanumanga is a reef island in northern Tuvalu that stands out with its compact, egg-shaped form, differing from the typical ring-shaped atolls of the region. The island is surrounded by a narrow fringing reef that makes access from the sea difficult, which historically contributed to its relative isolation. In 1986, the island gained international fame through the discovery of the Nanumanga Caves, underwater fire caves located at a depth of about 40 meters. This discovery provided archaeological evidence that sea levels were significantly lower in the distant past and that the island may have been inhabited much earlier than previously assumed. Residents primarily live in two villages, Togau and Matagi, maintaining a strong cultural identity reflected in traditional dances and oral traditions. Agriculture relies on the cultivation of pulaka (swamp taro) in excavated pits, a technique vital for survival on the nutrient-poor coral soils.
