Esquipulas is located in the Chiquimula Department and is widely regarded as the spiritual capital of Central America due to its immense religious significance. The city is home to the Basilica of Esquipulas, which enshrines the Black Christ, a renowned wooden image carved by Quirio Cataño in 1594. Every year, millions of pilgrims from across Latin America travel to the city, particularly for the main feast day in January. Historically, the city gained international prominence in 1986 as the site of the Esquipulas Peace Accords, which paved the way for ending civil wars across Central America. Geographically, the city lies in a valley at an altitude of approximately 950 meters, surrounded by mountains and coffee estates. The local economy is driven by religious tourism, commerce, and agriculture. The Basilica itself, completed in 1758, is a masterpiece of colonial Baroque architecture. Esquipulas also holds political importance as a seat for regional integration through the Central American Parliament.
