San Diego Volcano (El Salvador)

Weather…

San Diego Volcano is a smaller but geologically intriguing cinder cone located in the Santa Ana Department of northwestern El Salvador. It rises to an elevation of approximately 781 meters and is part of the larger San Diego-La Barra volcanic field situated near Lake Guija. The volcano is characterized by its regular conical shape and the surrounding extensive lava fields formed by prehistoric eruptions. The landscape is dominated by dry scrubland and volcanic rock, hosting unique flora and fauna adapted to these extreme conditions. Geologically, San Diego is an example of monogenetic volcanism, where eruptions occur from isolated centers. The area holds significant conservation value as part of the Trifinio Fraternidad Biosphere Reserve. Hikes to the summit traverse rugged terrain and offer expansive views over Lake Guija and the border with Guatemala. The region is also archaeologically significant, with traces of prehistoric settlements found nearby that took advantage of the fertile volcanic plains.
